A swivel chair upholstered with deep red moquette

Stop 2

Where: D27 Green

What: Pullman carriage chair

Material: Wood and velvet upholstery.

Why: In 1874, the Midland Railway were the first British company to order coaches from the Pullman company of Detroit. They were manufactured in America and shipped to Derby in crates where they were assembled in a specially built shed near the station. Luxuriously appointed, as the brand still represents today, this reclining seat was provided in one of the parlour cars, plying its trade between St. Pancras and Scotland. The photograph below shows a carriage full of them.
