Stop Six: The Clocks

Carry on along the left side of the Assemblage, stopping to look at the many Midland Railway bottles in the Glass area, before moving onto Wood.

Stop 6

Where: F10 — above you!

What: John Smith Clock

Material: Wooden case

Why: There are a lot of railway clocks on the Assemblage — having the right time has always been crucially important to everyone on the railway. This is a particularly lovely example made by Derby company John Smith and Son. Horologists will tell you this is a “drop case clock with fusee movement”. The two-faced John Walker clock nearby is also interesting, especially how someone has scrawled the 24 hour clock onto its face.

Another drop case close suspended from a roof beam, this time with the 24 hour times scrawled inellagantly on its face
