Stop Seven: The Finger Boards

Continuing along the E and F aisle in Wood

An ornately sign-written finger board pointing the way to the train to Birmingham, Derby, Sheffield and York and another, later example to the Express Train for Manchester and Liverpool

Stop 7

Where: E8 blue

What: Fingers!

Material: Wood

Why: These fingerboards were common in the age before electronic signs took over, literally pointing passengers toward their trains. A large box on the station platform would hold a board like these for every destination served by trains from that station, with the appropriate one being fixed to the post by a station porter in good time for the next train. Do take the time to appreciate the artistry in the fingers.
