Stop Five: Signal Box Nameboard

Still with aisle F to the left and E to the right...

A large wooden board with beading around the edge, painted white with black letters spread over three lines which reads 'Collingham & Swinderby Road Crossing'

Stop 5

Where: E10

What: Collingham & Swinderby Road Crossing nameboard

Material: Wood and cast iron letters

Why: Midland Railway signal box name boards were of a very distinctive and uniform style, which was subsequently adopted with only minor detail differences as the standard style for all LMS signal boxes. Almost always only extending to a single line, rarely to two lines, this example is truly unique in having three lines of lettering — a consequence of its positioning on a small gateman’s hut on the Nottingham to Lincoln line, which, as you can see below, was too narrow to accommodate anything else!
