Stop Sixteen: An Irish Wagon Plate

Still in the Metal section of Aisle 'B'...

A rectangular cast iron plate with rounded corners bearing the lettering MR. NCC and the large figure 3. It is pained green with red edges and the writing is white, though this has the appearance of a relatively recent restoration.

Stop 16

Where: B20 orange

What: NCC wagon plate

Material: Cast iron.

Why: This restored cast iron wagon plate serves as a reminder that the Midland Railway’s interests were not confined to Great Britain. They also wholly owned a subsidiary company in the north of Ireland called the Northern Counties Committee. Management of the company remained local to Belfast with very little interference from Derby. Unfortunately almost all the records for the company were destroyed in a fire caused by enemy action during the Second World War, meaning very little is left to commemorate this enterprise. The below map illustrates the extents of the Midland Railway's interests in Ireland.
