Where: D10 (picture rack No.2)
What: C. Hamilton Ellis original painting
Material: Framed oil painting on board
Why: Cuthbert Hamilton Ellis (1909-1987) was always referred-to with his first name as an initial. He was an exceptionally well regarded artist and was prolific in his railway subjects. Perhaps most notably he was responsible for a series of early railway themed paintings which adorned countless carriage compartments on British Railways, as illustrated below. He was also a noted author with over 30 books to his name, mostly on railway history. We are exceptionally proud to have this original oil painting by Ellis which shows a Midland Up Express passing Dore, just south of Sheffield. The only known use of this painting was to adorn the cover of Ellis’s seminal 1953 work The Midland Railway
