Stop Three: The Bridle

A horse bridle

Stop 3

Where: D27 blue

What: Bridle

Material: Leather with brass.

Why: Although now bearing LMS badges from its later owner, this bridle originates from the Midland Railway. The MR owned over 5,000 horses — remarkably more than twice as many horses as locomotives. They were used to pull delivery vans and trailers of all sorts, as well as for shunting goods wagons in sidings when it was often easier (and cheaper!) to use horsepower instead of steam locomotives.

Our catalogue entry for this item currently simply says: “M R Co bridle (with LMS plates) mounted on stand”. If you know more about horses than we do, can you suggest a better description?
