Item No. 32448
Letter notifying the National Provident Institution that a Policy of Insurance issued by them to Cedric Valentine Godfrey had beren reassigned. In the letter Godfrey is described as “County Borough of Derby Midland Railway Police Superintendent”, although this title is manifestly inaccurate. Having been a Superintendent in the Derbyshire County Constabulary at Eckington in 1901, Godfrey did in fact serve as the Superintendent of Police for the Midland Railway (the post effectively being the chief officer of the Company’s police department). He left in 1908 to become Chief Constable of Salford City Police, a position he still occupied as late as 1939, though served as a Major in the 1st Lancs. Fusiliers during the First World War. He died in Salford in 1949. He was succeeded as Superintendent of the Midland Railway Police Department by Maj. Lincoln Sandwick J.P. [See also RFB12999].
